Lacrosse: Averett edges Panthers 19-17 in hard fought USA South battle

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett edged LaGrange 19-17 in a hard-fought USA South battle Saturday. The Panthers are now 4-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Averett improved to 7-5 and 2-4.

Davida White had a career-high six goals to lead the Panthers. Rachael Thomas added five goals, while Eva Tallent had three goals and assists each. Brie Shepler with two goals and Megan French with one rounded out the scoring for LC.

Averett led 9-7 at halftime. Thomas with an assist from Tallent gave LC a 15-13 lead with 14:25 remaining. The Cougars answered with five straight goals to regain the lead, 18-15 with just over six minutes remaing. The Panthers got goals from White and Shepler just a minute apart to make it 18-17 with two minutes left. Averett added an insurance goal in the final minute for the 19-17 final.

The Panthers are scheduled to play at Ferrum on Sunday, weather permitting. The area forecast calls for 5-8 inches of snow tonight.
