Women's Basketball: Piedmont tops Panthers 67-52 in USA South opener for both teams

Piedmont topped LaGrange 67-52 in the USA South opener for both teams Saturday in Mariotti Gym. The Panthers are now 5-2 overall, while the Lady Lions improved to 5-1.

"We really got outplayed today by a talented Piedmont team," said Coach Lee Buchanan. "I felt like we played well in small stretches but we could never get any momentum. It's disappointing to play that poor on your home floor.

"I know we are a better team than we showed so its about going back to work, practice harder and competing. It's a long season and we have a lot more games to go. This is one loss and we must continue to learn and grow so this doesn't happen again."

Senior Lauren Johnson led the Panthers with a game-high 20 points, making 3-of-5 from 3-point range. She was the only LC player in double figures. Sarah Evans followed with 8 points off the bench.

LaGrange led only once in the game on Evans' layup to start the game. Piedmont led 18-12 after the first period and 31-24 at halftime.

The Lady Lions continued to build their lead in the second half. The Panthers got within three at the outset of the third period. Jeris Johnson's basket inside made it 39-36. But Piedmont opened up an 11-point lead and led by as many as 17 in the final stanza.

The Panthers play at Huntingdon on Dec. 13 in a USA South contest.
