Women's Basketball: Berry holds off Panthers' fourth quarter rally at USA South/SAA Classic

DEMOREST, Ga. - Berry held off LaGrange's fourth quarter rally for a 60-54 win Saturday at the USA South/Southern Athletic Association Classic at Piedmont College.

"I'm disappointed in the way we played today. I take blame for that and I will not let it happen again," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "We struggled in all phases of the game, plus half of our team is sick from colds so that makes it tough to find the energy on every possession.

"I thought Berry made some nice adjustments and played a good game. We battled late but when you miss 12 free throws it makes it hard to overcome."

Lauren Johnson had a game-high 16 points for the Panthers (3-2). Kelsey Walthall added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

The Panthers trailed by 15 after three quarters. The Vikings (3-2) got the first two points of the final period to go up 52-35.

Over a five-minute span, LC outscored Berry 15-2. Johnson made 3-of-4 free throws to get the Panthers within four, 54-50. But the Panthers made only one more basket over the final four minutes as the Vikings held on.

The Vikings led 24-13 with 1:37 left in the first half. Johnson and Katelyn Powell hit back-to-back 3s  to get the Panthers within three, 24-21, at halftime.

The Panthers face Oglethorpe in their final game of the tournament Sunday.
