Women's Basketball: Panthers pull away from N.C. Wesleyan for third straight win

LaGrange pulled away from visiting N.C. Wesleyan for a 70-44 USA South win Saturday in Mariotti Gym. 

The Panthers won their third straight to improve to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Battling Bishops slipped to 8-12 and 5-6.

"This was a very good team win today. N.C. Wesleyan is a good team, very quick and scrappy," said Coach Lee Buchanan. "Once again our defense was very solid and strong. Offensively we shot it well and converted 23-of-26 free throws.

"We played 17 players today and had a lot of contributions from all of them. I was very pleased with our hustle and effort from all of our players today."

Senior Kelsey Mitchell was the only player in the game to score in double figures with 11 points. Kymberli Payno added eight points, while Madison Barker, Lauren Johnson, and all had seven points.

The two teams played to a 18-18 tie in the first quarter. The Panthers held the Bishops to just seven second quarter points to lead 30-25 at halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers' steadily built their lead. The Bishops never got closer than the five point deficit at halftime, as the Panthers led by as many as 27 late in the game.

The Panthers held the Bishops to 19.4 percent shooting in the first half and 21.4 percent for the game. Payno and Jeris Johnson each had two blocks as the Panthers finished the game with seven. 

The Panthers host William Peace on Sunday at 1 p.m.
