FERRUM, Va. - LaGrange's second half rally came up short in a 62-57 loss to Ferrum in a USA South game Saturday.
The Panthers (10-7, 4-4) trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening minute of the fourth period. They rallied to retake the lead, but the host Panthers recovered to take the win.
"This was another tough loss on the road," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "Ferrum started the game really shooting it well but I was proud of our effort to keep playing hard.
"We had the lead late in the game but a couple of mistakes and pour execution hurts us. We have to a very short memory because we play again in less than 24 hours at Averett."
Sophomore Kymberli Payno led the Panthers with 10 points. She added seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Bethany Howard had a perfect shooting day. Howard was 3-3 from the floor and at the line to finish with nine points.
The Panthers were trailing 50-39 at the outset of the fourth quarter. But they put together a 16-1 run over the next five minutes to take the lead for the first time in the game.
Payno scored seven straight points to give the Panthers a 53-51 lead. She made a couple of jump shots, sandwiched around a three-point play. Kelsey Mitchell finished the run with a lay up to make it 55-51 with 4:18 left.
The Panthers went cold over the next four minutes as Ferrum retook the lead, 58-55. Mitchell cut the deficit to one after scoring off a layup with 19 seconds left, but the host Panthers hit four straight free throws to seal the win.
The Panthers trailed 19-3 six minutes into the game before cutting the Ferrum lead to 22-12 after one period. Ferrum led 35-24 at haltime.
The Panthers play at Averett on Sunday and Methodist on Wednesday in USA South games. They return home next weekend for USA South games against William Peace and N.C. Wesleyan.
