Women's Basketball: Panthers beat Agnes Scott with second half surge
LaGrange College used a second half surge to get past Agnes Scott College 67-43 on Wednesday at Mariotti Gym in the first round of the GSAC Championship Tournament. The Panthers are 18-8 on the season, while the Scotties end their season at 8-16 after their third loss of the season to the Panthers.
LaGrange advances to Friday's semifinals at Mariotti to face second-seeded Piedmont at 1 p.m. The two teams split the two regular season games.
Katie Covington had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers. Alex Wilson had 13 points and Anjelica Wilcox 12 off the bench. Heather Miller also had 12 points.
Agnes Scott jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the early going. The Panthers outscored the Scotties 21-2 over an eight minute span. Covington had seven points in the run to help tie the game at 13. Wilcox scored off a layup to put the Panthers up 15-13 and they never trailed again.
The Panthers led 29-19 after a basket by Abbey Martin with 2:46 left in the half. Agnes Scott finished the half on a 9-2 run to close within 31-28 at halftime.
The Scotties stayed close for the first four minutes of the second half before the Panthers began pulling away. The Panthers held the Scotties to five points over a 12-minute span to build a 61-37 lead.
The Panthers held Agnes Scott to 28.3 percent shooting in the game, 20.0 percent in the second half. The Scotties made 4-of-23 3-point attempts.
The Panthers shot 44.8 percent in the second half, to finish the game at 40.0 percent. The Panthers had a 44-39 edge in rebounding.
