Softball: Covenant takes USA South first round series from Panthers

Covenant knocked LaGrange out of the USA South Tournament with 4-2 and 3-1 wins in the best-of-three first round series Friday at the LC Softball Complex.

Game 1- Covenant's Cris Gant (3-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Katelin Richardson walked with one out in the sixth. Emily Barrs broke up the no-hitter with a single to right center to put runners on the corners. Brittany Todd's double down the right field line scored pinch-runner Carolyn Harkness. Pinch-runner Amber Arnold came home on a wild pitch to make 4-2. Emily Cauldwell (7-11) pitched a complete game for the Panthers. She gave up the four runs, three were earned, walked one, struck out four, and scattered 10- hits.

Game 2- The Scots (22-18) built a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Panthers (13-21) got a run back in the fifth. Harkness led off the inning with a single. She moved over to third on back-to-back groundouts, then scored as Sydney Hodorff reached on an error. Harkness and Sutton Bridges each had two hits as the LC finished with nine in the game. Chelsea Twardoski (6-8) took the loss, allowing the three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two.

The Panthers play a doubleheader at Emory on Tuesday, April 17.
