Emily Barrs led LaGrange to a non-conference sweep of Brevard on Sunday at the LC Softball Complex. The Panthers (12-16) hung on for a 7-6 first game win, then completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in five innings in the second game.
Barrs went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader, with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and six RBIs. Carolyn Harkness had three hits and scored four runs. The Panthers built a 7-0 lead after three innings in the first game. They took advantage of three Brevard (5-11) errors during a five-run second inning. Barrs hit a two-run home run in the inning. The Tornados used the long ball in a six-run sixth inning. They got a two-run home run from Amber Wong, then a grand slam from Emily White to make it 7-6. Brevard loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Chelsea Twardoski came on to get the last two outs to seal the victory. It was the first save of the season for Twardoski and for the team.
Twardoski (4-6) started went the full five innings. She surrendered an unearned run, scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Barrs had three more hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Sutton Bridges had a double included in her two hits. Taylor Tallant also had a double as the Panthers finished with 11 hits. Brittany Todd's two-run single was part of a three-run first inning. Barrs doubled in two more runs in the second to make it 5-0. LC added a run in the fourth, then closed out the game on the 8-run mercy rule in the fifth on Sydney Hodorff's RBI single for the 9-1 final.
The Panthers play a USA South doubleheader at Agnes Scott on Wednesday.
