LaGrange and Covenant split a USA South doubleheader Saturday at the LC Softball Complex. The Panthers (7-13, 5-1 USA South) took the first game 7-2 before Covenant (12-12, 4-2 USA South) earned a split with a 7-5 victory in the second game.
Game 1: Brittany Todd went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Panthers. Todd tied the game 2-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth. Emily Barrs broke the tie with an RBI double in the fifth. Madison Martin and Taylor Tallant also had run scoring doubles in the inning. Todd closed out the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth. Emily Cauldwell (5-6) went the distance for LC to get the win. She scattered seven hits, and only one run was earned.
Game 2: Covenant scored twice in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie off Cauldwell, who was making a relief appearance. The Panthers trailed 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third. Emily Barrs had a sacrifice fly and Martin a run-scoring single to make it 3-2. LC tied the game on pinch-hitter Riley Densmore's base hit in the fifth. The Scots retook the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers answered again with two runs to tie the game. Ground outs by Tallant and Kaitlin Richardson brought in the runs before Covenant got the go-ahead runs in the seventh.
The Panthers play a USA South doubleheader at Maryville on Tuesday.
