Men's Basketball: Piedmont hands Panthers heartbreaking 70-68 USA South loss

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont scored in the final seconds to hand LaGrange a heartbreaking 70-68 loss in a USA South game Wednesday at the Cave Arena. The loss left the Panthers 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Alex Bonner led three Panthers in double figures with 13 points. Travis Thompson followed with 12 and Steven Wagner a season and career high 11. Wagner was 4-of-5 shooting in the game, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

The Lions (5-6, 3-2 USA South) led 44-30 at halftime. The Panthers shaved 12 points off the deficit in the first five minutes of the second half. Gary Bishop's trey made it a 47-45 game. But the Panthers still trailed by seven, 61-54, with 7:28 left.

Bonner's two free throws pulled the Panthers within a point, 66-65, with 4:13 left. Trailing 68-65, Wagner tied the game with a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining. The Lions got the game-winner when Jordan Foote put back a missed shot with two seconds left. The Panthers were unable to get off a final shot.

The Panthers play at Huntingdon next Wednesday in a USA South game.
