Men's Basketball: Maryville pulls away for 63-50 win over Panthers

Maryville College pulled away from LaGrange College in the second half for a 63-50 win Saturday at Mariotti Gym. The Panthers slipped to 11-14 overall and 6-2 in the GSAC. Maryville improved to 16-9 and 6-2 in conference play.

Despite the loss, the Panthers will be the top seed in next week's GSAC tournament at Mariotti. The Panthers will play fourth-seeded Huntingdon on Friday at 3:30, followed by second-seeded Maryville and third-seeded Piedmont at 7:30.

The Panthers honored their lone senior before the game. Point guard Blake Craft has been a four-year letterman for the Panthers, appearing in 103 games with 48 starts.

Kyron Anderson led the Panthers with 15 points, 11 coming in the second half. Denzel Robinson added 14 points and Joey Anderkavich 13.

The Panthers trailed 31-24 at halftime. Anderkavich made 1-of-2 free throws for a 12-11 lead midway through the half. It would be the last time the Panthers led in the game. Anderson scored at the buzzer to get the Panthers within seven points.

In the second half, the Panthers battled back to tie the game at 39 on a jumper by Anderson. But the game changed when Marcus Vaughn was ejected with 13:39 remaining. Vaughn had nine rebounds in the game and the Panthers missed his inside presence.

The Panthers stayed in the game, tying it two more times. Robinson's layup with 7:36 left tied it for the last time, 47-47. Anderkavich fouled out with 6:29 left and the Scots ran off eight straight points to go up 63-47 with less than a minute remaining.
