Golf: Panthers tied for fourth after first round of USA South Tournament

The LaGrange golf team is tied for fourth after the first round of the USA South Tournament on Thursday. The Panthers had a team score of 302 for the Highland Country Club Course.

Senior Jake Nelson led LC with a 1-over par 73. Nelson had a team-best four birdies during his round. He is tied for ninth in the individual standings. Freshmen Sam Rogers and Cameron Starr were two shots back of Nelson with 3-over par 75s. Starr's round was highlighted by an eagle 3 on the par 5 third hole. Ben Womack (79) and Nathan Garner (82) rounded out the scoring for the Panthers.

Methodist leads N.C. Wesleyan by five shots and Huntingdon is six shots back. Maryville is tied with the Panthers, with Greensboro, Piedmont, Ferrum, and Averett following. 

The Panthers begin teeing off for the second round at 8:48 a.m. on Friday.
