Golf: Panthers come in second at Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate Tournament

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team came in second at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate Tournament, just one shot back of Emory.

The Panthers battled Emory and top-ranked Huntingdon for the lead over the final nine holes. Huntingdon took the lead briefly, then the Panthers surged ahead, only to have Emory overtake them at the end to win by the one stroke.

LaGrange had a final round team score of 298, tied for the second lowest round of the day, and tournament total of 597. Oglethorpe was three shots back of the Panthers in third. Huntingdon (601) finished in a tie for fourth with Sewanee.

"We played well and beat some really good teams," Coach Lee Richter said. "You're never ashamed when you beat the No. 1 team in the country. It's amazing how close these teams are when there almost 600 shots over the two days and have it come down to one shot.

"This is the third tournament this season we lost by one shot. I preach to these guys that every shot counts and hopefully they're starting to learn that."

Seniors Logan Lanier and Osborn Theam each had final rounds of 2-over par 74. They tied for third in the individual standings and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Junior Eric Havixbeck and freshman Drew Duffie both had rounds of 75. Duffie had a team-high five birdies in his round. Senior Anthony Scolapio improved by seven shots from the first round with a 79.

The Panthers play in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on March 17-19. They are the two-time defending champions.
