Golf: Panthers off to strong start at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team is off to a strong start at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. The Panthers are second after Friday's first round at the Pine Lakes Golf Club.

The Panthers had a team round of two-under par 286 and are one shot back of Illinois Wesleyan in the 30-team field. The round was the team's lowest of the 2015-16 season.

"This is the strongest field ever in this event," Coach Lee Richter said. "Even though we got off to a good start there is a long way to go."

Junior Logan Lanier led the way for the Panthers with a 3-under 69 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings. Lanier tied his low round of the 2015-16 season. Fellow juniors Osborn Theam and Anthony Scolapio had rounds of 1-under par 71 and even par 72 respectively. Theam had his lowest round of the season. Alex Ball, the Panthers' only senior, had a round of 74 followed by sophomore Eric Havixbeck at 77.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
