Golf: Panthers open spring season at Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate Tournament

The nationally-ranked LaGrange golf team opens its spring season at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate in Pine Mountain, Ga. The tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Callaway Gardens' Mountain View course.

The Panthers enter the tournament ranked 16th in the Division III Coaches Poll and 19th in the Golfstat rankings. In the fall season's four tournmaments, the Panthers had a second place finish and tied for second in another.

The Panthers are led by junior All-Americans Logan Lanier and Osborn Theam

Lanier is ranked third in the Golfstat Division III player rankings. He had a team-best 71.36 stroke average in the fall. In all four tournaments Lanier finished in the top 10. He was third at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational and tied for third at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate.

Theam posted a 74.45 stroke average to follow Lanier. He tied for 10th at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.

The Callaway Gardens tournament field features top-ranked Methodist, second-ranked Berry, and fourth-ranked Oglethorpe from the coaches poll. Other nationally-ranked teams, including the Panthers, are eighth-ranked Rhodes, 12th-ranked Huntingdon, and 20th-ranked Centre.

The USA South conference has seven of its 11 teams in the tournament. Averett, Greensboro, Maryville, and Piedmont join LC, Huntingdon, and Methodist in the field.
