Baseball: Ferrum rallies to beat Panthers 8-7, takes USA South series

FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum rallied to beat LaGrange 8-7 on Sunday to take the USA South series. The loss left the Panthers 22-15 overall and 10-8 in conference play. Ferrum improved to 10-7 in the conference and 14-19 on the season.

Freshman designated hitter McKinley Erves drove in five runs for LC. He had a bases-loaded double in the first inning, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI triple to drive in the final run for the Panthers.

The Panthers jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first inning. Erves' double drove in the first three runs of the inning. Austin Jones followed with a two-run home run to cap the inning. Ferrum answered with a run in each of the first three innings. The host Panthers took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning. Zach English (3-1) took the loss for LC. He allowed an unearned run in 3-1/3 innings of work. Andrew Padovano started and was relieved by Tanner Chafin. Gibson Bittner got the final two outs in the eighth inning.

The Panthers play in the USA South Tournament to be held Wednesday, April 11 through Saturday, April 14. LC is the defending tournament champion.
