Baseball: Panthers sweep away Piedmont to take USA South series

LaGrange swept Piedmont 12-7 and 12-2 in a USA South doubleheader Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers (20-13, 9-6 USA South) bounced back from an 11-6 loss Friday in the first game of the series with the Lions (17-10, 11-4 USA South).

LC got relief pitching in the first game, while banging out 26 hits, and taking advantage of 10 Piedmont errors in the twinbill. Rhett Mixon went 7-for-11 with four runs scored, and four RBIs. 

Piedmont led 6-5 heading to the fifth inning of Game 1. The Lions put runners on second and third with one out. Gibson Bittner relieved starter Collin Barrett, and got out of the inning with only one run scoring. Bittner (4-1) allowed only two hits over the final 4-2/3 innings to get the win. LC answered with three runs in the bottomof the fifth to take the lead. Austin Jones' two-run double to right center capped the inning for an 8-7 lead. The Panthers put four more runs in the seventh to go up 12-7. Mixon and Dawson Weaver each had two-run singles in the inning. Mixon would finish with three hits and three RBIs. Jack Layrisson scored three runs, had two hits, and drove in two more runs.

The Panthers controlled the second game from the start. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, aided by three Piedmont errors in the inning. LC led 11-1 by the end of the fifth inning. Austin Fain (4-2) went 5-2/3 innings to pick up the win. He surrendered an unearned run, scattered six hits, walked three, and struck out five. Andrew Padavano allowed a run in 2-1/3 innings. Zach English threw a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win. The Panthers had 15 hits in the game. Mixon had four hits and scored three runs. Layrisson had a pair of singles and drove in three runs. Weaver finished with two base hits and scored three runs. McKinley Erves and Jackson Patrick also had two hits.

LC plays a non-conference game at Oglethorpe on Tuesday. The Panthers travel to Ferrum to close out their USA South schedule next Friday and Saturday.
