Baseball: Layrisson-led Panthers roll past Oglethorpe 17-3

LaGrange rolled past Oglethorpe 17-3 on Tuesday in a non-conference game at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers are now 18-12, while the Stormy Petrels slipped to 17-10.

The Panthers needed only 10 hits in the game, taking advantage of 10 walks and four hit batters by seven Oglethorpe pitchers. Freshman Jack Layrisson had three hits, including a team-leading sixth triple, and a season-high five RBIs. Nick Fink and Dawson Weaver each had two hits. Weaver, Trey Robinson, and James Poropatic all scored three runs. Robinson walked four times and was hit by a pitch. 

Gibson Bittner (3-0) made his first start of the season and went four innings to pick up the win. He gave up a run, four hits, walked none, and struck out a season-high seven batters. Zach English threw four shutout innings, giving up just one hit. Tyler Richards pitched the ninth to close out the game.

The Panthers needed just one hit in taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Layrisson's two-run single came after three straight walks to open the inning. In the fourth, he had an RBI single and a two-run triple as part of a 10-run inning to break the game open. 

The Panthers host USA South rival Piedmont in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
