Baseball: Panthers sweep Brevard 12-0 and 3-0 behind strong pitching

Colin Barrett threw a complete game four-hitter as LaGrange blanked Brevard 3-0 to complete a sweep of a doubleheader Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers took the first game 12-0, as they had back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season. The two wins evened LC's record at 10-10.

Game 1: The Panthers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. They scored five in the seventh to end the game on the 12-run mercy rule. Richie Post and Dustin Tardy combined to hold the Tornados (2-14) to five hits. Post (2-1) started and went six innings, walking one and struck out five, while allowing four hits. Tardy threw a scoreless seventh inning in his first appearance of the season. Austin McDade had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs as LC banged out 13 hits. Nick Fink also had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in another. Rhett Mixon's two-run triple capped the seventh inning.

Game 2: Barrett (4-3) threw the Panthers' first complete game of the season. He gave up the four hits, walked two and struck out seven. At one point, Barrett retired 12 straight batters. Barrett and Brevard's Tyler Timms were locked up in a scoreless pitching duel through four innings. Jackson Patrick opened the fifth with a single and moved up on Rhett Hollon's sacrifice. Trey Robinson, making his first start of the season, singled up the middle as Patrick came around to score the first run of the game. Robinson stole second, then third as Mixon struck out. He was hit by the throw and scored as the ball rolled into left field to make it 2-0. LC added an insurance run in the eighth without benefit of a hit. Mixon was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He stole second and went over to third on an error on the play. McKinley Erves' sacrifice fly drove in Mixon to up the lead to 3-0.

The two teams complete their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
