Baseball: Sewanee uses late inning rally to spoil Panthers' season opener

Sewanee's rallied in the final three inning to spoil 10th-ranked LaGrange's season opener at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium.

The visiting Tigers (1-0) did all of their scoring in the final three innings, including an eight-run outburst in the eighth inning. The rally against the Panther bullpen spoiled a strong start by sophomore Richie Post.

Post pitched six strong shutout innings before leaving with a 5-0 lead. He tied a career high with eight strikeouts, while allowing three hits.

LC led 5-1 going into the eighth inning. Sewanee faced five Panther relievers in the inning. The Tigers took advantage of seven walks and an error in taking a 9-5 lead. In the ninth, the visitors tacked on four more runs to close out the scoring. Eleven of the Tigers' 13 runs in the game were unearned. Grayson Bagwell took the loss for the Panthers.

The Panthers did all of their scoring in the second inning, all with two outs. James Poropatic's RBI single opened the scoring. Porpatic's hit was the first of five straight for LC. Dawson Weaver and Rhett Hollon had run scoring singles, while Jacob Gassert drove in two run with his base hit.

LC had nine hits in the game. Poropatic, Weaver, and Ryan Ross each had two hits in the game.

The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
