Baseball: Panthers take DH from Averett to complete second straight USA South series sweep

DANVILLE, Va. - LaGrange took a doubleheader from Averett on Saturday, winning 5-1 and 11-1 to complete a second straight USA South conference series sweep.

The Panthers improved to 16-10 overall with the wins. They are now 8-4 in conference play and tied with Maryville for third in the league standings. The Panthers have won six straight conference games for the first time since the 2006 season. 

The Panthers' pitching staff turned in another dominating series, allowing Averett only three earned runs in the series. In the past six USA South games, the Panthers' pitching staff has given up five earned runs in 54 innings, a 0.83 ERA.

Ryan Broaderick (4-2) went seven innings in the first game, giving up only two hits and an unearned run. In the second game, Andrew Weekley (2-1) pitched seven shutout innings, scattering five hits. He is now working on a 16-1/3 scoreless innings streak.

In the first game, the Panthers had 11 hits. Blane Swift had two hits including a triple and drove in a run. Blake Butcher also had two hits and an RBI.

The Panthers, who outscored the Cougars 23-5 in the series, broke out in the second game with 14 hits. The Panthers were helped by the Cougars' pitching issuing 12 walks in the game.

Casey Bell's double was the Panthers' only extra base hit in the game. Bell finished with three hits and three RBIs. Tavin Thompson also drove in three runs, while Butcher added three more hits.

The Panthers host Oglethorpe in a non-conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
