MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Junior Andrew Weekley threw a complete game shutout as LaGrange completed a three-game sweep of Huntingdon with a 7-0 win Sunday at Posey Field.
With the victory, the Panthers improved to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in the USA South. They have already equalled last year's win total.
"We had great pitching all weekend," Coach David Kelton said. "We played good defense and swung the bats really well.
"Our guys played with great energy and toughness all three games. I am proud of the way they bounced back and competed this weekend."
After giving up 30 runs in back-to-back losses to Piedmont and Berry to start the week, the Panthers' pitching staff was dominating against the Hawks (10-10, 2-4 USA South). They posted two shutouts and gave up just two earned runs in the series.
Weekley was making his first start of the season. He surrendered just three hits, while walking just one and striking out seven. The Hawks had runners reach third only twice in the game.
Blake Butcher and Cains Sauls backed Weekley with a combined four hits and three RBIs each. Butcher hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Butcher's RBI single in the first inning staked Weekley to a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, he followed Saul's run-scoring hit with his home run to up the Panthers lead to 4-0.
With a 5-0 lead in the ninth, the Panthers added a pair of insurance runs. With runners on second and third, Sauls delivered a two-out single to make it 7-0.
The Panthers play at No. 5 Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday. They resume USA South play next weekend at Averett.
