Baseball: Piedmont downs Panthers to take USA South conference series

Piedmont took the deciding game of its USA South conference series against LaGrange with a 15-5 win over the Panthers on Monday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium.

The loss left the Panthers 10-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Piedmont is now 10-5 and 3-3 after taking two of three in the series.

The Panthers fell behind 5-0 by the third inning. They got two of the runs back in their half of the third.

Tavin Thompson walked with one out and came around to score on Casey Bell's double to left center. Blake Butcher drove in Bell with a two-out hit to left to make it 5-2.

The Lions got three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to build a 12-2 lead. The Panthers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 12-5. Kyle Gutowski had an RBI single in the inning.

Piedmont closed out the scoring with three runs in the ninth off reliever Zack English, who pitched the final two innings.

Austin Brown (0-1) started and took the loss for the Panthers, allowing seven runs in four innings. Andrew Weekley gave up five runs in three innings, but only one of the runs was earned.

The Panthers play Berry on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Thomasville, Ga. This is the second meeting between the teams. The Vikings edged the Panthers 6-5 in 10 innings back on Feb. 10.
