Baseball: Oglethorpe edges Panthers 7-6 on walk-off hit in ninth

ATLANTA, Ga. - Oglethorpe pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge LaGrange 7-6 in a non-conference game Tuesday. The Panthers are now 9-6 on the season. Oglethorpe improved to 6-2.

Junior shortstop Tavin Thompson had two hits to run his hitting streak to 15. Cain Sauls also had two hits, including his second home run of the season.

Sauls' home run in the first inning gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Stormy Petrels tied the game in their half of the first and added four runs in the third off starter Toby King to go up 5-1.

The Panthers used a three-run fourth inning to get within a run. Chad Pigg drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, then Blane Swift followed with a two-run triple to make it 5-4.

The Panthers tied the game in the fifth when Keith Sims scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Swift came home on Joe Pradat's sacrifice bunt to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead.

Oglethorpe put runners on second and third in the ninth off reliever Andrew Weekley (0-1). Blake Schuck came on for Weekley and issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Austin Ferlita ended the game with a two-run single.

The Panthers face Piedmont in a three-game USA South series Friday and Saturday at the Perfect Game LakePoint Complex in Emerson, Ga. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
