LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange split a USA South conference doubleheader Saturday against Covenant.
Sophomore Ryan Broaderick threw his second straight complete game shutout as the Panthers (9-5, 1-2 USA South) won Game 1 7-0. Covenant (7-5, 2-1 USA South) rallied to take the second game 5-4 in 10 innings.
Broaderick allowed only three hits in running his scoreless innings streak to 18-1/3. He struck out six and walked only one. The Scots got only one runner as far as third against Broaderick, who threw 73 strikes out of 108 pitches.
The Panthers backed Broaderick with a pair of home runs by Blake Butcher and Keith Sims. Butcher hit his third home run of the season, a two-out two-run shot to right center in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Sims hit his first collegiate home run with a man on in the fifth to up the Panthers' lead to 4-0.
Butcher is tied for the conference lead in home runs and third in RBIs with 14.
The Panthers trailed 3-1 in the second game. Chad Pigg had a two-out RBI single in the fifth, and tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
In the 10th, the Panthers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning. Pigg drove in his third run of the game with a two-out base hit to drive in Cain Sauls from second.
Releiver Adam DeWitt (0-2) got the first two outs in the bottom of the 10th. But the Scots rallied and got back-to-back singles to drive in the tying and winning runs.
Sauls led the Panthers' 12-hit attack with three. In the past five games, the junior is 12-for-19 and batting .632.
The Panthers play at Oglethorpe on Tuesday.
