2016-17 Review/Men's Basketball: Alex Bonner's shot sends Panthers past William Peace and into USA South semifinals

DANVILLE, Va. - Alex Bonner's shot with two seconds left lifted LaGrange to an 80-78 win over William Peace on Feb. 23 in the first round of the USA South Tournament being played at Averett University.

The Panthers (16-10) will play top-seeded Averett on Friday in the semifinals at 7 p.m. LC has now reached the tournament semifinals for the fourth straight year.

Bonner led LaGrange with 19 points and Justyn Olson added 18. Drew Vanderbrook had a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jamison McCray had 13 points off the bench.

The Panthers avenged a 109-86 loss to the Pacers (15-11) last Saturday. It marked the third time this season LC has lost the first meeting to a team, then won the rematch.

LaGrange spent most of the game playing catchup. William Peace led by 15, 39-24, with 3:53 remaining in the first half.

The Panthers ran off 14 straight points to get within a point. Olson, who was 10-for-10 at the free throw line, made two to make it 39-38. The Pacers scored the final four points of the half to go up 43-38.

LC tied the game at 50 on Bonner's jump shot with 14:13 left. Olson's 3-pointer put the Panthers up 57-56 three minutes later, their first lead since early in the game.

William Peace took a 70-64 lead, but the Panthers came back once again. Vanderbrook's 3-pointer put LC up 73-72 with 3:19 left.

Bonner scored the Panthers' final seven points. He made the second of two free throws for a 78-74 lead. The Pacers tied the game at 78 with 25 seconds left. Bonner delivered his game-winner with two seconds left and the Pacers were unable to get off a shot at the buzzer.
